For a budget, go with the 1420. Personally, I have the 1520 but it is more future proof because of the 8600m GT. If you don't need it for gaming at all, go with the 1420. The colors are sweet but do think about the delays.

It really depends on the models you're looking at. Once you've identified a few options that fit your needs you can compare all those specs on your own.
Personally, I think the touchscreens are still a bit gimmicky. Most are not very accurate and still don't have enough compatible software to make them really useful.
This system is worth the $650 you would spend. If you are going to use it for a long time though, I would consider upgrading your processor. The other pices can be upgraded easily, but the processor and mother board it is on are harder to upgrade. Duo cores are good, but look at getting a faster processor, like a duo core 2.0Gh. The T2050 is equivelent to a 1.6Gh processor. You wont be unhappy with this though unless you are going to use it for heavy gaming. You might check Dell also, you can build your own, so compare prices. Gateway has had a questionable name lately, but I doubt that you will be unhappy.

Good ideas going on now? That's an interesting concept. Alienware is certainly a good idea all by itself because they actually give you insanely good components for the money. Apple at the opposite extreme figures that what is inside the case doesn't matter if they can get you looking at the case itself and they have had a good idea on how to sell a whole lot of Air!
There is this big trend to paint the outside of laptops and reduce what is on the inside so that it is getting hard to find any separate graphics chip in budget and even mid-range models. So the huge volume of these low-end units sends out yet another wave of low powered graphics that isn't any better than a $30 video card purchased in 1998 – and yes I'm talking about the dreaded Intel 3100 integrated graphics chip stuffed into the chipset as an afterthought and stealing it's video RAM from the system memory to kill performance in two ways. What evil fiendish person came up with that plan?
It is getting just a tiny bit easier now to find a decent 7200 rpm hard drive option, but most laptops still ship with the insanly slow 5400 rpm drives. So between the 3100 and the 5400, there is that nagging feeling you get in front of your 2008 laptop that it isn't any faster than your old computer from 1998….
But you can get more colors these days…. right now all the good ideas are about how to increase profits…

Dual core or single core, you won't be able to maximize its capabilities unless you use them the right way and what they are really built for. It also depends on how you use it and maintain your system.
Stop fooling yourself with the number on the gigahertz and buy the laptop that's really built according to how you will use it!
